As painting contractors, we often mistake “busyness” with effectiveness. There is nothing more exhilarating than arriving to work on Monday morning and spending the entire day hurriedly “putting out fires” and dealing with “life and death problems.”

When we have solved all the urgent, unsolvable difficulties, extinguished the last fire, and soothed the final customer, it is Friday and then the process begins anew.

Playing the part of the swashbuckling problem solver certainly produces a feeling of accomplishment, but if you will only take a moment in the peace and quiet of your day to examine that feeling, you may find it rings a bit false. It feels at least temporary.

For most painters, the winter months are much slower from an operational standpoint. We are afforded a terrific opportunity and luxury: surplus time.

What will you do with this surplus time to make 2015 the best year ever for your painting business?

Instead of finding things to do “around the shop” or piddling with trivial matters, let me make a suggestion to you: Take this time to think, organize, and create an action plan for greater profitability in the coming year.
